Maasai Mara vs Amboseli: Choosing Your First Kenyan Safari

Two famous parks, two different reasons to go.

If you have time for only one famous park, the choice between the Maasai Mara and Amboseli is really a choice of mood.

Choose the Mara if you want classic savannah game drives, wide herds, and the possibility of lions, cheetahs, and hyenas in open country. It is also the park people come to for the migration, usually in the second half of the year. A first visit wants time: an arrival drive, then morning and evening drives on the full days, and no drive on the morning you leave.

Choose Amboseli if the picture in your mind is elephants with a mountain behind them. Kilimanjaro is not guaranteed — cloud takes it often — but when it is clear, it is the climax of the park. The landscape is more compact than the Mara, which suits a shorter stay, and the elephant viewing is the reason most people come.

If the journey can hold both, do. They do not repeat each other. The Mara is grass and sky and cats. Amboseli is dust, swamp edges, elephants, and that mountain. Two nights in Amboseli and three or four in the Mara is a generous first Kenya, especially with a night in Nairobi on either side.

Tell us which picture you have been keeping. We will start the route there.
